Almost a year ago…before the writing began.

24 Dec

Since tonight is Christmas Eve and tomorrow is Christmas, I thought I’d share a picture I came across today from last Christmas.

It’s crazy to think how much can happen in a year. This time last year, the idea of starting my memoir of living with Cerebral Palsy hadn’t come into existence quite yet, and in all actuality, that is hard for me to believe. I remember how, on a cold winter day in January, I made the quick and impulsive decision and said, “I’m going to write a book about my life!”

A few days later, after I had spent many hours just writing, writing, writing without even thinking of stopping, I emailed two very important people in my life: my writing mentor and my freshman English professor from my previous college, both of whom have always been incredibly supportive of my writing. Both of them have always been big supporters of me in general, and so I wasn’t surprised to receive positive reactions concerning my decision to write a book about my life. Though I did receive support from both of them, I sensed hesitation, and truthfully, I’m still unsure if that hesitation was just my own lack of self-confidence coming to the surface or whether it was something else entirely. Either way, at those very beginning days of my memoir, when only the first thoughts of it were being formulated in my mind, I never thought I’d reach the point where I could talk about my past with such ease. Granted, there are definitely memories that still cause me to pause simply because I haven’t quite gotten the guts to pull them out of the black box they have been hidden in for so long, but considering where I was this time last year, I’ve come very far.

Truthfully, it’s because of the support I’ve received from my mentors, friends, family and all you lovely fellow bloggers that I have made it to this point concerning my memoir. Though the amount of pages I have written is incredibly, incredibly slim considering a full year has passed since I began, most of my writing took more mental preparations than I anticipated in the beginning. Though I wrote like crazy in the beginning month of beginning my memoir, that “early fire” started to fade when the emotions of what I was doing began to fully set in. Since then, I have continued battling those emotions, and those battles have taken up more time than I anticipated….time that could’ve been spent writing. However, I needed to give attention to those battles…to all of the emotions that were being brought to the surface after essentially burying huge chunks of my life in boxes in the back of my mind. Therefore, though I don’t have very many pages to show for all that I have trudged through over the past year, if anything….I know what I have finally faced…and what I have grown from.

Therefore, I wish to say thank you for every single one of you who have been a part of the supportive hug I’ve been receiving for the past year. To family, friends, mentors, and fellow bloggers…thank you for sticking with me through the really hard writing days, the really good writing days, and all those days in between when I was either talking about my memoir or talking about a certain memory from my past. Though there is still a very, very long way to go, I know from experience that the beginning of a project…or the simple act of even starting it…is the hardest. Though there were many days throughout the last year that I either debating stopping or could no longer remember why I was putting myself through the pain of writing and reliving the hard parts of my life, I kept at it. I kept at it for you, for me, and for all the families and kids dealing with a disability who just need someone to relate to or someone who understands or someone who they can look to and say, “She made it through. So can I.”

As well as my many thanks and lots of love, I’d also like to wish all of you a happy holiday season. 🙂

Kreativ Blogger Award! AND Versatile Blogger Award!

8 Jan

At the end of this past December, I was nominated for the Kreativ Blogger Award as well as the Versatile Blogger Award, and wow! Thanks to the three people who’ve made me feel so special, especially since I’ve only been on WordPress since the beginning of November.

Thanks to Laura (http://cheesecakesummer.wordpress.com/) for nominating me for the Kreativ Blogger Award. It means a lot.

The rules:

  1. Share 10 things others on WordPress don’t know about you.
  2. Pass this award on to 6 other bloggers
10 Things
  1. I love to sing. In the shower. In the car. Anywhere, everywhere.
  2. I love musicals. I’ve seen Wicked, Hairspray, and All Shook Up on Broadway in NYC, and Wicked has been my favorite.
  3. I’m an incredibly neat person. Some consider me a “neat freak” but I just like to keep things tidy and organized
  4. I got an acoustic guitar from my parents when I graduated from high school in 2010. I haven’t learned to play yet, but I’m hoping that’ll change in the next few years.
  5. I absolutely love traveling. I’m hoping to study in Ireland this coming summer, and I can’t wait.
  6. Spicy food is my best friend. Ranging from Indian food, Mexican food, and Thai food…I love all the heat! Every time I go to any of these types of restaurants, I always ask for the hottest heat for my entrees. People have told me that one day I might burn away my taste buds from eating so much spicy food, but I won’t listen.
  7. I have all the seasons of Gilmore Girls even though the show was cancelled back in 2007, and I still watch them on a regular basis. As a matter of fact, I’m watching season 6 right now.
  8. I’ve recently become interested in my appearance/style, which is a big deal if you know me really well. Anyway, since going on a huge shopping spree with my friend Skidmore, I’ve discovered the amazingness of TJ Maxx and Ross. Seriously, if you’re a clothes lover, check them out. They have amazing deals when it comes to great clothes!
  9. I collect coffee cups from different places. It’s become a slow collection since I’ve only been a huge fan of coffee for about 5 years, but so far I’ve got coffee cups from Seattle, Ireland, New York, Texas, Maine, and Massachusetts. I can’t wait to collect more from other states!
  10. In 2007, I acted as Glinda in the Wizard of Oz. To this day, it was my favorite musical that I had the pleasure of acting in.
Bloggers I’ve nominated:
Thanks to Jill Lurie (http://thenakedturtle.wordpress.com) and Stephen (http://aninspiredline.wordpress.com) for nominating me for the Versatile Blogger Award.

The rules for the Versatile Blogger Award are:
1. Nominate 15 fellow bloggers.
2. Inform the bloggers of their nomination.
3. Share 7 random facts about yourself.
4. Thank the blogger who nominated you.
5. Add the Versatile Blogger Award picture on your blog post.

Even though I just did 10 random facts, I think I can think of seven more. Hopefully. Stick with me.

  1. I got a DSLR camera last Christmas (2010), and it’s a Canon Rebel XS. I have enjoyed photographing my dogs, sunsets, beaches, mountains, and random experiences throughout my life.
  2. Ice cream is my comfort food, and I eat it whenever I’m sad or upset. It just seems to make everything so much better.
  3. My favorite color is purple.
  4. I want to have a “library” of books one day, or just lots and lots of books.
  5. I’m a very homely person. Since living on my own for the past 4 years, I’ve realized that I love keeping things clean and that I pick it after myself much more than when I used to live at home.
  6. I’ve gotten close with my uncle over the past year, and I’m so happy that we have such a great relationship now.
  7. I’m ready to “grow up” so that I can have my own dog. Since I grew up with dogs, it’s made me want my own even more. Thankfully, until I can have my own dog, I still have 2 dogs at home that I can play with when I get lonely.

Since I doubt I can nominate 15 bloggers, I think I’m just going to leave this post at that. I do hope you all have enjoyed reading these facts. Check out the blogs I nominated though because they really are awesome!

One Month!

1 Dec

Well, I’ve done it! I’ve blogged every day for an entire month! It’s been quite a journey. It was hard at first to figure out what to write, but then after a while, it just kinda came to me. Every day’s post is different and reflects on my day, my mood, music, and sometimes my past. It’s been a good month. Not entirely in the sense of being able to say “yay” to everything, but I’ve worked through stuff. I’ve begun the slow task of moving past some things that have held me down for a long time.

I think the most beneficial part of this blog is the relief I feel after I write a post. It’s similar to the relief I get from having a massage, but just a different kind of relief. I’ve come to realize how much I’ve missed writing out my feelings, and it’s been a good routine I’ve gotten myself into. It doesn’t always make things easier, but I think it helps, in its own little way.

Special thanks to all the people who have read my blog thus far. Thank you for your kind words and support. I’ve enjoyed reading many of your blogs as well. It’s given me a chance to become more aware of the fact that in any situation, none of us are ever alone, even if we feel like we’re sitting in the most empty room in the world.

So, it’s been one month of blogging! Hoorah! May the month of December be just as fun!
