Gilmore Girls as stress relief.

As stress reaches extreme levels this week due to research papers, final presentations and final exams, I’ve had to give myself daily stress relief so I can keep my sanity. Yesterday’s stress relief involved 20 minutes on the elliptical at the campus gym and 30 minutes of yoga stretches, which was just what I needed. Today, however, after a long day of classes and a night of studying for my Humanities exam tomorrow and working on my Humanities research paper ahead of me, I know I need an extra special stress relief. Therefore, I’ve turned to the stress relief classic: Gilmore Girls. It’s a tv show that never ceases to relax me and make me laugh. To make things even better, I’m giving myself a double dose. 🙂


Give yourself emotional gifts.

Stress is a funny thing. When it reaches high amounts, it is overwhelming, often causing us to cry, scream or give up on our project altogether. However, in small amounts it can be good. It can help us be more productive and help us to get things done quicker than we might have if there was no deadline in place. However, more often than not, it’s not one of these extremes. Often, our stress levels fluctuate, and I know from personal experience (in college especially), it’s not always easy to prepare yourself for the massive stress days. In my experience, it’s better to focus on the aftermath that the stress creates rather than trying to trick yourself into not getting stressed. As it turns out, that increases the chances of you getting equally worked up about something that is close to meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

Today I hit an incredibly high level of stress because I had a Humanities exam this morning. Unfortunately, stress didn’t work in my favor on this particular exam. I completely freaked. I blanked when I got the exam and only felt confident about the essay portion of the exam (since that was the part that I spent most of my time preparing for). Therefore, after I turned in my exam, I knew the aftermath was coming. I could feel it. I knew that I’d just have to let it out. So I did. I cried. I yelled. I got frustrated (first at my professor and then more at myself for over-studying and not focusing on the right things). I ran into 2 friends of mine and thankfully they let me vent, which was just what I needed. However, even after venting and going to a Psychology talk on autism that I wanted to attend, I was still feeling a bit overwhelmed. The aftermath was still lingering, and I needed to find a way to get it out of my system.

I came home and considered giving myself some emotional gifts, or some things that I knew would help me relax and make me feel better. I settled on 3 things: a bubble bath, Gilmore Girls re-runs, and chocolate. First off, I don’t know what it is about bubble baths that makes them so amazing. However, I just know that it always seems like my stress melts away whenever I take a bubble bath. That could partly be because the bubble bath formula that I use is specifically for stress relief and ache relief. Though I definitely do think the actual bubble bath formula is part of it, the simple act of soaking in warm water with bubbly soap just makes me feel better. I’m smiling just thinking about it. The Gilmore Girls re-runs and the chocolate added to an already much more relaxed me, which was perfect. However, though I chose 3 specific things that I thought would make me feel better in the moment, I know that on a different day with a different situation I may have needed something completely different.

Often times, I just feel like I need to remind myself that I deserve treating myself to emotional gifts, or doing something that has no purpose other than to make me happy. Though I think of treating myself most often when I have rough days, I think we should all remember that sometimes we just need a little treat every once in a while. Due to the fact that I’ve been in more physical pain over the last few months, the realization that I need to treat myself more often so that I can feel better is incredibly strong. Even though today’s bubble bath, Gilmore Girls, and chocolate was all wonderful, tomorrow is restorative yoga, bubble bath, and pleasure reading (after class, obviously). I’m smiling just thinking about it. 🙂

Those Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days…

….of summer. Though it’s not summer, it’s been a lazy day for me. I’m on Spring Break though, so I’m allowed to be lazy right? I think so!

I started off my lazy day by sleeping til noon. Though that may seem insanely late to most of you, it’s pretty typical of most college kids when they come home for breaks. However, I don’t think I’ve slept til noon since last summer, so it’s been a while. I needed the sleep though. Last week before Spring Break I had 3 midterms, a paper, work, and regular classes, so after all of that, I was WIPED! Also, during that week I didn’t get much sleep since I spent so much time studying in the library or going to class or work. Whew, busy busy! It’s been so, so nice to have a break, and I’ve needed it.

Anyway, my lazy day then continued by making black beans and brown rice with green salsa for lunch and watching re-runs of Grey’s Anatomy on Lifetime. Ah, gotta love it! Though black beans and rice was my staple for a while, I haven’t had it as much recently (not including the days that I work at the campus bookstore since I only have 15 minutes to eat). Anyway, it was nice to have it again. It’s a nice comfort food, even though my favorite comfort food is chicken perlo (which is a moist version of chicken and rice that’s incredible! If you’ve never had it, you should definitely give it a try).

After lunch, I curled up on the couch with a blanket and immersed myself in the words of Jodi Picoult’s newest novel, Lone Wolf. As I’ve said before, Jodi Picoult is my favorite author. I’m loving Lone Wolf as much as I have enjoyed all of her other novels. I’m even more amazed by her because in March of 2010, I got to opportunity to hear her speak about her book, House Rules. It was one of the best days I’ve ever had. Getting to hear her speak was the equivalent Bieber-crazed teenager having a front row seat to a Justin Bieber concert. Since my mom and I got to Jodi Picoult’s talk so soon, we got to be in the front row (since the tickets for the event didn’t have assigned seats). I also got House Rules signed by Jodi and asked her to put in one of the comments I enjoyed from her talk. It was: “Writer’s block is for those who have a luxury of time.” It’s something I have to remind myself as a writer, and I just love that my all-time favorite author was able to teach me something so valuable!

Andddd….now the One Lovely Blog Award!
So, from looking at Laura’s post, there don’t seem to be any rules for this award. So I’m just going to stick with what Laura did, and I’ll list 10 things that I love. So here goes!
  1. Gilmore Girls and Grey’s Anatomy. They are my two favorite tv shows, and they make me so happy.
  2. Broadway musicals. I’ve seen Hairspray, All Shook Up, and Wicked on Broadway. I saw Wicked last August, and it was by far my favorite. Since I am a big fan of the Wizard of Oz (since I played Glinda when my childhood theater group did the Wizard of Oz back in 2007) AND since the songs are just AMAZING, it was my favorite without question!
  3. I’ve recently grown to really love scarves. I actually got 5 scarves this past Christmas, so I guess everyone was on the same wavelength or something.
  4. Yoga pants are now my pants of choice. This past weekend my mom and I went to buy me some yoga pants, and they are seriously SO comfy. I tried on jeans after wearing yoga pants for a few hours, and it just wasn’t the same. I’ll have to only wear them on occasion though since I don’t want the fact that they’re super comfy to make me sleepy.
  5. Sunsets are my favorite thing to photograph.
  6. I’m a grammar nerd, and I LOVE it!
  7. I’m going to see Marc Broussard in concert on February 10th, and I’m SO excited!
  8. I am a big texture person (in terms of foods and clothes). If foods have a weird texture or clothes aren’t relatively soft, then I’m not a fan.
  9. All kinds of music! Country, rock, pop, indie, acoustic, folk, alternative. I love it all!
  10. Ice cream. It’s pretty much my favorite thing in the entire world! There’s an ice cream place in Asheville called The Hop (they have their own homemade ice cream), and Mocha Oreo is currently my favorite flavor. It’s so so yummy!

Are those snowflakes I see?!

“The world changes when it snows. It’s quiet. Everything softens.”-Gilmore Girls

It’s official. At approximately 3:30 this afternoon, I spotted the first snowflakes of the season! Even though it’s not sticking and it’s only snowing off and on, it’s so pretty. I’ve opened my window so that I can smell the amazing snow-filled air. This is quite a treat for me. I’m originally from South Carolina where it doesn’t snow much, so I’ve been looking forward to winter in Asheville for quite some time. The fact that it’s snowed today has also made me realize just how close Christmas is. So, I’m sitting in my room watching the snow and listening to Christmas music. I still can’t believe it’s that time of year again. I feel like it was just Halloween a few days ago.

This semester has flown by, which is both a blessing and a bummer. I’ve loved my first semester at Asheville, but I’m also reaching the point of just being totally burned out, so I’m just ready to be done already. I want to get these papers and projects out of the way so that all I have to do is get excited about Key West. Me, my parents, my brother, my brother’s girlfriend, and my friend Heather are all going to Key West for a few days before Christmas. I’m really looking forward to it. It’ll be nice to have a fun trip to get excited for the holiday season. Plus, I haven’t seen my friend Heather since before Thanksgiving so I really miss her.

Current Christmas Music: Last Christmas by Taylor Swift. I’m a HUGE Taylor Swift fan, and I’ve always really loved her Christmas music, so it’s a win-win.

I relate things in my every day life to Gilmore Girls, and I realized today just how many lessons I’ve learned from Gilmore Girls (whether they’re true life lessons or just witty comments from the show that I love). Here’s a list:
1. All bad girls wear red nail polish.
2. Coffee is a girl’s best friend.
3. Bagels are like glue in your intestines.
4. “Oi” is one of the funniest words in the world.
5. Brazzelfrat and snicklefritz are essentials words for life.
6. You can be “normal” special and then you can be “stop eating the paste” special.
7. The plural of “cul-de-sac” is “culs-de-sac.”
8. Snow is magical.
9. The difference between cows and humans is hay.
10. Fries are the devil’s starchy fingers.
11. When making the largest pizza in the world, stay clear of the hot cheese.
12. Ethics are highly subjective and completely overrated.
13. A banana eating contest isn’t always about eating a banana.
14. It’s much better to have a haunted leg than a cold.

Keep The Memories.

Today was a wonderful day with different friends. It’s days like these that I wish could last forever. That’s the great thing about memories though. They never leave you. They are always with you, and you can always look back and smile at all the wonderful moments you spent with friends. So even though every day ends, memories can make those days last a lifetime.

The greatness of today started with my typical Wednesday lunch in the cafeteria with Malia and Errign. They love having the opportunity to eat the variety of food in the cafeteria, and I enjoy having company for lunch, so we’ve made Wednesday our traditional day of the week to eat in the cafeteria. Today was especially nice because we ate outside and made plans for lunch on Friday (yay Indian food) and movie night on Friday night. I’m especially excited for Friday night because it has been so long since I’ve had a movie night with friends! 🙂

The greatness continued when Newswriting class was cancelled, and I got to use that time to finish up my Newswriting article that’s not due until Friday. Yay for being productive! I’m thinking of rewarding myself by enjoying Private Practice and Gilmore Girls once I finish this post, haha. They’re two really great shows if you haven’t heard of them. Gilmore Girls was cancelled a few years ago, but I still watch it since I’m obsessed. Private Practice is a relatively new show to me (I just started watching it last week), but it’s a spin-off of Grey’s Anatomy (the main character is Addison from Grey’s). So if you’re a Grey’s Anatomy fan, you should definitely check out Private Practice. I’ve enjoyed it so far! 🙂

And the greatness ended with dinner at Mellow Mushroom in downtown with Emily. I haven’t had the chance to go downtown much simply because I don’t always like going alone, so it was nice being able to walk around and hear the street musicians playing music on their acoustic guitars. And Mellow Mushroom was delicious as usual. I hadn’t been in a while, so it was definitely a nice treat. Getting to know Emily better was the best part though. I’m excited to hang out with her more and enjoy live music at the Grey Eagle and the Orange Peel in the near future. We even started talking about a possible trip over Spring Break. We don’t have a destination in mind, but we both have always wanted to go somewhere during Spring Break, so I hope that we can get that worked out in the Spring. It’d be fun to get some friends together and have a road trip.
